Injection Therapy for the Patient with Ankle and Foot Pain
Kim Don-Kyu

Abstract
Joint and soft tissue injection of the ankle and foot region are useful therapeutic and some helpful diagnostic tool for the physician. Triamcinolone acetonide and Methylprednisolone acetate are commonly used corticosteroid preparations, while 15% and 25% dextrose solutions are used for prolotherapy. This article reviews the injection procedure for the ankle joint, subtalar joint, first metatarsophalangeal joint and achilles tendon. Diagnostic aspiration or therapeutic injection of the ankle, subtalar and first metatarsophalangeal joints can be performed for management of advanced osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other inflammatory arthritides such as gout, or synovitis or an arthrosis. Indications for prolotherapy injection include degeneration secondary to repetitive use and traumatic injuries that are unresponsive to conservative treatment. The proper technique, choice and quantity of pharmaceuticals, and appropriate follow-up are essential for good outcomes.
